The purpose of a psychoeducational evaluation is usually to determine a
young person's current level of intellectual, cognitive and academic
functioning so that effective educational strategies and appropriate
psychological and behavioral supports can be put into place. The
remedial strategies and teaching technologies that I recommend to help young
people who have specific learning disabilities in reading, math or written
language have been shown to be effective in well-controlled research
studies.
The remediation links I've posted here
can provide valuable resources and information to families seeking help.
Some are what I consider to be "seminal articles" which discuss the "whole
language/phonics debate" and what we know from brain research about how
children (and adults) learn (you'll notice that reading development has been
particularly well-studied, math and writing less so). Some are important
predecessors of the President's "No Child Left Behind" program (the reports
from the National Reading Panel). Others relate to specific learning
technologies.
